Has it ever struck you … that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going? It’s really all memory … except for each passing moment.
The most dangerous phrase in the language is, “we’ve always done it this way.”
"Come on, let’s mix it up!" The heart surgeon says.
"B-but we’ve always done it this way!" The other replies, "this is how you replace a heart valve."
"That’s the most dangerous phrase in the human language!" The first surgeon replies haughtily as he inputs a fruit loop into the patient’s heart. "This will be his valve. He will be a fruit loop in a world of Cheerios."

This is serious business, because this is a large part of how sexism, racism, homophobia, rape culture, ethnocentrism, etc. continue to happen.
In the 1990s, a group of liberal Hungarian politicians challenged the same-sex marriage ban in Hungary, based on the Constitution providing equal rights to all citizens. The Constitutional Court (what Americans would call the Supreme Court) upheld the ban, stating that even though the Constitution does guarantee equal rights, same-sex marriage is not included in the “traditional” concept of marriage. Basically, they chose to uphold “tradition”, an arbitrary concept to say the least, instead of the very clearly written legal document that their job was to enforce. Because “we’ve always done it this way”.
It’s a moot point though, as the current religious/rightish government’s newly enacted Constitution (dubbed as the Contraption by some opposition politicians), which still protects equal rights, also has the same-sex marriage ban right in it (what a nice bit of inconsistency - equal rights for everyone, except for gays because we said so), making it impossible to overturn without a 2/3rd majority vote by the Parliament, which I don’t see happening in this country for decades. Because we’ve always done it this way.
